Engineering Manager (Scala/Backend)

Position: Permanent

Office Location: Grays Inn Road, London - Work Location: ITV can support a range of on-site and remote (UK hours) working arrangements.

Summary

ITV is the biggest commercial television network in the UK. Behind every famous face, there are hundreds of others, all doing their bit to make things happen. We love telly, we’re passionate about content and most importantly we understand our audiences. As a growing international company, we’re commercially minded and have a global focus. We’re all about pushing the boundaries and being innovative.

ITV On Demand is home to the platform that powers the ITV Hub and BritBox UK.

Last year the Hub served over 1.8 billion videos to over 30 million users across 29 platforms including Amazon Fire, Xbox, Android and iOS devices to name but a few. We’re constantly expanding with year-on-year video delivery increasing by 23%.

BritBox is ITV’s joint venture with the BBC and other content partners, that aims to deliver a best-in-class subscription video service for great British content - all powered by technology battle-tested on the Hub.

Engineering at ITV

The On Demand Scala engineering teams operate in a highly empowered and collaborative environment. We work hard to ensure our diverse workforce can solve problems fearlessly in the way they see fit, using the tools they want to use. Our culture is inclusive and supportive, discussions are robust but always good natured. We’re proud of the caliber of engineers this environment fosters from our graduates and career-changers, all the way up to our most experienced developers.

Much of this is achieved by our trusting approach to people management and team coaching, but as the On Demand department grows - covering not only Scala but also JavaScript, Java, Elm, and other technologies - we need enthusiastic people-people to help ensure we retain the freedom and support our engineers thrive on.

Engineering Manager Candidates

We are looking for an Engineering Manager who is able to help nurture and grow the On Demand Technology engineering organisation. The role has technical aspects but primarily focuses on a people-first approach to ensuring we’re delivering at our best by developing our teams, our engineers, and the processes that empower them.

Engineering Managers will work across our multidisciplinary department to foster alignment and shared understanding but are expected to specialise in Scala for this specific role. While a background in commercial Scala is not required, successful candidates will need to be keenly interested in learning about typed functional programming generally, and Scala in particular.

The ideal candidate will be a smart, kind, and empathic person with an enthusiasm for software development, architecture and programming. You will have previously been an engineer/developer at a reasonably senior level, having worked in a number of environments and business types.

Above all, you will be excited about helping people achieve their best, and be motivated by the reward of seeing your teams succeed. This role is a fantastic opportunity to help shape one of the fastest moving, highest growth, and strategically important areas of ITV.

Examples of Day-to-Day Activities

  • Support and coach Scala engineers, advocating best practices
  • Champion developer motivation principles around autonomy, mastery and purpose
  • Organise individual and team training opportunities
  • Leading the Scala Domain Communities of Practice
  • Line management - possibly including matrix management of non-Scala engineers
  • Coaching and advising on career development

Key Criteria & Experience

Ideally, you will have experience in a previous Engineering Manager role. Otherwise, you must be able to demonstrate experience in either senior level software development, or with managing teams of software engineers, or a combination of the two.

Technical experience could include:

  • Programming in Scala  / FP
  • Testing practices
