The team

The Enterprise Platforms Platform Engineer will help evolve the Enterprise Platform, in line with changing business requirements for corporate application hosting.  

This exciting, broad role has responsibility for the development, implementation and continuous improvement and operations of the Enterprise Platforms product set, within Central Technology. The technology stack includes but is not limited to the following corporate hosting environments and platforms:

  • AWS Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) for Enterprise
  • Azure Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) for Enterprise
  • GCP Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  • Windows workloads
  • SQL workloads
  • Linux workloads
  • Azure VMWare Solution (AVS) in Azure
  • Citrix
  • Jira
  • LogicMonitor
  • Puppet
  • PowerShell 

The role-holder is responsible for the provision and maintenance of an efficient, stable and secure platform for corporate application hosting, on premise and in the public cloud.  

Main responsibilities

  • Develop the Enterprise Platforms product set, including automation with IaC and configuration management tooling to drive efficiency and to solve problems related to infrastructure operations. 
  • Operational responsibilities in AWS, Azure, GCP, Windows & Linux both in-hours and out-of-hours
  • Provide consultancy to business teams and application teams
  • Work on multiple new demand and change requests from the business
  • Build long-term, meaningful relationships with application teams and other central technology teams
  • Codify central infrastructure components, including observability, backups, AD and networking
  • Support MSPs and other 3rd parties with complex technical tasks
  • Continuously improve the customer experience of the Enterprise Platform toolset through measurement, education, training and stakeholder communication.
  • Develop platform solutions and complex automation on Windows, Linux using Puppet, PowerShell, BASH, Ruby 
  • Be security conscious and make security a top priority in all engineering work
  • Be operationally focussed and make reliability and supportability a top priority in all engineering work
  • Have a firm eye on cost. Work with the Enterprise Platforms Product Manager and Head of FinOps to identify and execute on cost saving opportunities.
  • Use appropriate service management tools, project management tools and communications tools to ensure that all stakeholders are kept up-to-date on progress of tasks

Skills you’ll need (minimum criteria)

  • Experience of delivery and operation of multiple products end-to-end
  • Experience of engaging with a range of stakeholders
  • Experience of liaising between technical experts and non-technical or business stakeholders
  • Experience of Scrum or Kanban-based agile delivery approaches, tools and measurement is essential
  • Extensive experience of Windows Server administration
  • Extensive experience of Linux administration
  • Experience of platform engineering good practice, including orchestration, automation and software configuration management tools (ideally Puppet) is essential
  • Experience of cloud infrastructure toolsets is essential
  • Good knowledge of PowerShell is essential
  • Experience of implementing operating systems management toolsets for Windows and/or Linux platforms is desirable
  • Experience of deploying and managing MS SQL databases is desirable

  • Confident communicator who can present a compelling and well-reasoned case for investment or change; ability to engage with stakeholders and customers confidently and communicate clearly and concisely
  • Questioning and curious, demonstrates an appetite for change and a desire to improve and enhance the customer experience of platform technology
  • Commercially aware: applies business context and able to represent company interests in conversations with suppliers and other third parties
  • Passionate about technology with a keen interest in developments in Cloud and Automation technology and a strong knowledge of the trends in the industry and market place
  • Highly collaborative: Enjoys bouncing ideas, methods and technologies around a team to ensure the best approach is taken
  • Willing to demonstrate flexibility in working hours to ensure critical projects go-live within required timelines
  • An open, collaborative approach to knowledge sharing and issue investigation
  • A willingness to learn new technologies in a fast changing environment
